Aging is an inevitable natural process and no one can completely prevent it from happening. However, countless individuals cannot accept this fact and is trying desperately to prevent it from developing or even slowing it down. This objective made these people take a number of medicines and supplements—ranging from over-the-counter ones to prescription drugs. Others have even tried using anti-aging products to delay the effects of the passage of time on one's physical attributes. Later on, many of these anti-aging products, particularly skin products have been linked to the development of cancer and other chronic illness. Medical experts argue that taking such medication may not be able to prevent the effects of aging. What can be done according to them is to age gracefully. This can be achieved by maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise and healthy diet. Regular health and fitness activities like exercise may contribute to healthy aging in many ways. A well-balanced diet which contains the right amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fibers should be consumed. Medical experts say that the antioxidants and the anti-inflammatory activities of food could be much more or beyond attacking free radicals that promote and eliminate disease. Doctors suggest the consumption of the following: Fish Eat twice weekly, especially the fatty kind that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This is a powerful anti-inflammatory food that offers a multitude of health benefits like lowering blood pressure, reducing blood clotting, enhancing immune functions, among others. Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables contain many health-promoting substances like antioxidants that help remove free radicals and other harmful elements in the body. Consume at least 5 servings per day to get the maximum benefits. Whole Grains Whole grains provide soluble fiber that may help lower the cholesterol levels. Grains also contain many phytonutrients. For best results, consume at least three servings of grains a day. Nuts Nuts are a great source of B vitamins that are good for your heart and your brain. The healthy fats in nuts benefit the elastin and collagen in skin, both of which can help maintain good skin cell structure. Small portions are advised since most nuts are high in calories. Water Water is essential for hydration of the skin. It is also important for the nourishment of the muscles and proper blood circulation. Drinking three to four glasses of water in addition to other liquids and watery foods may greatly improve one’s health. Individuals who want to change their lifestyles are advised to seek the approval of their doctors to make healthy and graceful aging possible. Individuals with certain conditions may not be able to engage in some exercise and eat certain foods. Growing old gracefully is perfectly possible especially if one maintains the right attitude and discipline in both physical exercise and eating habits. It is also very helpful if one has open communication with one’s doctor and health care providers.
