The word benjarong is a coined word from two languages – ‘benja’ from Balinese and ‘rong’ from Sanskrit, which together means five colors. Traditionally the five colors used to make benjarong items were red, yellow, green, blue and white. In recent times two more colors have been augmented which are high quality gold and maroon. The designs of benjaron over the centuries have improved a lot. Today artists use their innovative techniques to design and color the porcelain and bone china ware. Still the basic elements of benjarong are appreciated which includes the lotus, the rose, the emblems of Supan and Chakri dynasties. The chief characteristic of such benjarong china bone items is that they are densely painted and delicately designed with enamel relief glaze which emphasize the background and it is further accentuated by gold.

The steps of benjarong art on bone china and porcelain include drawing, painting, firing and maintaining quality. This process is known to only a handful of families who have been doing this through generations. It is said that they keep secrets of how it is made, how they mix the colors, how the patterns and the paint is applied on the bone china. The only known fact is that the basic white porcelain and bone china are hand made, after firing they are polished. This is important for the success of benjarong art decorations. Then a fine thin layer of white paint is applied followed by further heating or firing for a glaze appearance.

The drawing on the hand painted benjarong and fine bone china from Thailand begins with circular guide lines on a turning wheel, turned basically by the artist. The initial pattern is crucial of turning out the design and that’s why they are done by a master craftsman and highly skilled painters who have gained enough experience over the years. The painting is then done from rim to base thus making the bone china and porcelain items typical benjarong items. After that the items are fired again to make the enamel a glass matrix and permanent. The finish never fades and it is strong enough to resist scratching and any kind of staining.
