Will Gastric Bypass Surgery Benefit Me?

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon creates a pouch out of your stomach, divides the stomach and then attaches the pouch to your intestine, which will bypass the lower stomach; such gives the name Gastric Bypass. This surgery is meant to limit the amount of food you consume in a single sitting. This also shortens the digestive track so that fewer calories are kept in the body.

To qualify for this type of surgery you must be considered obese. In other terms you must have a body mass index of over 40 or be 100 or more pounds overweight. This is surgery is becoming more and more popular for those who are morbidly obese. If you qualify for this type of surgery please take the following risks into consideration before you jump in to have the procedure done.

Risks come with every surgery, the following are associated with this particular surgery and my not happen to every one who has the surgery. These include bleeding, gallstones due to excessive weight loss, infections, future surgeries to correct any complications, iron and vitamin B-12 deficiencies along with calcium deficiency.

Common side effects of this surgery are vomiting and nausea, diarrhea, bloating, and dizziness. These side effects are caused by taking in more food than the pouch can hold. They can also be avoided or reduced if you follow the diet you will be given by your dietitian.

After surgery you will begin to see results. Many patients lost up to 10 pounds each month after surgery, with many have their excess weight off with in 24 months of surgery. Immediately following surgery you will be put on a liquid only diet, this is to help with the healing process of the surgery and to limit the amount of food and calories you take in. During this liquid only diet is when you will see the biggest amount of pounds coming off.

When the surgery is over and you are on your way to recovery and eating less, you must keep in mind that although the procedure will teach you how to eat less, you will still have to exercise and diet. This surgery may not be right for everyone so you should definitely talk to your doctor and surgeon before the procedure begins. Be sure to voice your concerns and have any questions answered.
